Market Trends of ANZ Satellite Communications Industry

Defence and Military forces will hold the significant share

  • Satellite communication has gained significant traction due to its excessive use in the defense and military sectors for transmitting information and establishing communication between military personnel. Furthermore, it also helps with satellite-asset tracking and remote sensing. For instance, life safety at sea has been gaining importance in the defense sector. The governments of various countries are investing in communication technology, such as navigation systems and vessel tracking. The governments of countries like Australia, China, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Indonesia play a vital role in promoting maritime security, as the naval industry adds to the region's economic growth.
  • On December 2022, New Zealand staked USD 500 million on COTS to network its military. The Land Tactical Information Network, the future network environment for the New Zealand Army, is what NEA is ultimately aiming to build. In a clear and deliberate contrast to some of its partners, the Defence Force's Network Enabled Army (NEA) program focuses on bringing established technology and equipment that can be adopted quickly and provide essential capabilities. Nevertheless, the little Pacific nation of New Zealand is prepared to invest far over NZD 700 million (USD 435 million) in this program over the next ten years.
  • Partnership agreements can be noted between service providers to address the increasing demand for satellite communication in the military and defense fields. For instance, in August 2022, SpaceLink announced that it collaborated with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to create protocols for the interoperability of commercial communications constellations with military and defense technologies. One of the 11 companies chosen for the first stage of the Space BACN project is SpaceLink, which is developing a constellation of data-relay satellites in medium Earth orbit linked by laser lines. Parsons Corp. and SpaceLink are also partners. SpaceLink uses Parsons' Optimyz satellite tasking and scheduling software, which DARPA also chose to manage its own Blackjack spacecraft. SpaceLink will create a technological strategy and interface for DARPA's laser communications project to allow space-to-space optical communications terminals that can be dynamically updated on orbit and talk across numerous optical standards used by satellite systems.
  • The multibillion-dollar JP9102 project, which supplies the Commonwealth with a defense satellite communication system, has chosen Lockheed Martin as Australia's preferred bidder. Project JP9102 will provide Australia with its first autonomously operated satellite communication system over the Indo-Pacific region. In addition to the geostationary satellite, the American defense behemoth will give Canberra two new operations centers and an integrated satellite communications management system.

Technology advancement by Government in the Aviation industry will drive the market

  • The aviation industry's future depends heavily on technology. It would be crucial for airport operators to use satellite communication, given the worldwide efforts to increase safety and the growing demand for connectivity among travelers. The level of connectivity required at all times for the safe and efficient operation of airports is challenging to maintain because airports are frequently situated in isolated places with challenging topography. Furthermore, the areas where sites often need more infrastructure. These problems are resolved by satellite communication, which requires very little infrastructure and can always provide reliable internet service despite rapidly changing weather conditions or remote locations.
  • In September 2022, Network Innovations, a provider of vital communications products and services, announced its partnership with hiSky, a provider of advanced voice and IoT satellite communications technology. Utilizing a patented technology, hiSky's low data rate (LDR) network, perfect for Industrialized Internet of Things (IIoT) applications, transmits LDR through high-frequency Ka/Ku-band networks to provide end users with affordable satellite solutions.
  • Australia is leading a navigation modernization effort to move pilots away from using ground-based navigation aids to satellites as their primary means of navigation in response to the rapidly increasing air traffic and the need to ensure our airspace is managed as safely and efficiently as possible.
  • In May 2023, Inmarsat was given a USD 187.4 million ANZ contract for satellite positioning. These can reduce location errors from several meters to as low as ten centimeters. With that level of precision, more automated systems utilized in aviation, maritime, agricultural, mining, and emergency services and enhanced collision avoidance for autonomous vehicles will be available.
