- In June 2023, the European Union (EU) introduced Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, focusing on batteries and waste management. This legislation mandates sustainability, safety, and labeling standards for a broad spectrum of batteries, encompassing portable, SLI (starting, lighting, and ignition), LMT (light means of transport), electric vehicle, industrial, and product-integrated batteries. Emphasizing the entire battery life cycle, from production through to recycling, the regulation aims to bolster safety, sustainability, and competitiveness.
- In February 2024, ReElement Technologies made a memorandum of understanding with Afrivolt to support the development of Africa’s regional and global lithium-ion battery supply chains. As per the agreement, both companies will work together to establish a comprehensive closed-loop lithium battery and electric vehicle manufacturing ecosystem within Africa.
- In January 2024, Northvolt, a Swedish lithium-ion battery manufacturer, received EU approval for a substantial EUR 902 million (USD 986.43 million) German state aid package to build an electric vehicle (EV) battery production plant in Heide, Germany. The approval supports Germany and the wider EU in achieving net-zero targets.
- June 2023: Tata Group signed an outline on constructing a lithium-ion cell factory, with an investment of about INR 130 billion (USD 1.58 billion), as part of India’s efforts to create its electric vehicle supply chain. A joint statement on the MoU between Tata's unit Agratas Energy Storage Solutions and the government of the western state of Gujarat stated that the work on the plant was expected to start in less than three years and to be based in Sanand, northern Gujarat. The plant is expected to have an initial manufacturing capacity of 20 GWh, which could be doubled in a second expansion phase.
- November 2023: The US Department of Energy (DOE) announced up to USD 3.5 billion from the Infrastructure Law to boost domestic production of battery materials and advanced batteries nationwide. It is a part of President Biden's Investing in America agenda, and the funding is expected to create new, retrofitted, and expanded domestic facilities for battery components, battery-grade processed critical minerals, cell and pack manufacturing, and battery precursor materials. These are critical in supporting clean energy industries like renewable energy and electric vehicles.
- August 2023: Amara Raja Batteries announced plans to expand into the two-wheeler EV market through chargers and batteries to expand to triple its lithium-ion business. Amara Raja, whose customers are only in the three-wheeler EV market, received about 2.5% of its total revenue from its lithium-ion battery business, while the rest of INR 103.85 billion (USD 1.25 billion) in FY 2023 was from its flagship lead-acid storage battery-making unit. The company, which owns the Amaron battery brand, aims to enter the two-wheeler EV market with chargers first and eventually through battery packs as it expands its 'new energy' segment.
- April 2024: The Moroccan government signed a USD 300 million agreement with China's BTR New Material Group to build a plant in the port city of Tangier to produce cathodes used in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. According to Morroco's Investment Ministry, the plant will have a production capacity of about 50,000 tonnes, and the first output of 25,000 tonnes is expected in September 2026.
- September 2023: The Saudi investment company Energy Capital Group announced a collaboration with the US tech startup Pure Lithium to develop batteries using lithium extracted from oilfield brines. It launched in Saudi Arabia with an initial USD 50 million investment to help meet the surging demand for lithium-ion battery metals. ERG is also a founding member of the Global Battery Alliance, which is dedicated to establishing a sustainable global supply chain for lithium-ion batteries.
- In March 2024, LeydenJar, a Dutch battery manufacturer and developer, announced that it is going to open its first battery production factory in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The company expects to begin production in 2026 as it continues to create the world’s most energy-dense battery.

- June 2023: Schaeffler, a German-based manufacturer of automotive components, announced the launch of new automotive lead acid batteries called ‘TruPower 2W’ The battery used VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) technology to ensure efficient and safe battery functioning.
- January 2024: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in India has released the standard operating procedure (SOP) for recycling lead scrap/used lead-acid batteries. The SOP aims to regulate the import, transport, and recycling of lead-bearing waste while minimizing environmental and health risks. According to the SOP published by the Central Pollution Control Board in January, a statutory organization under MoEFCC, all units engaged in scrapping should obtain valid authorization from the relevant State Pollution Control Board or Pollution Control Committee in line with the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016. In addition, stringent packaging requirements are also required for the transporting of these batteries. Imported used lead-acid batteries should also have the caps of cells properly tightened in place during transportation.

- October 2023: VinES announced its merger with VinFast to enhance battery technology's self-efficiency and leverage resources to increase battery research and development for EVs.
- May 2023: Marubeni Corporation of Japan announced that it was collaborating with VinES, a Vietnamese battery and energy-as-a-service provider, to create energy storage facilities in the Southeast Asian country. Marubeni will start its part of the collaboration with a feasibility study of battery energy storage system (BESS) installations that might be deployed at Vingroup commercial and industrial (C&I) locations.
