EMEA Aviation Infrastructure Market Analysis
The Europe, Middle-East And Africa Aviation Infrastructure Market size is estimated at USD 1.03 billion in 2024, and is expected to reach USD 1.27 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 4.42% during the forecast period (2024-2029).
The aviation sector remained one of the best-performing sectors for many countries in the EMEA region. The growth in passenger traffic in the region forced the governments to increase their investments in the airport infrastructure to make the airports highly adaptive and proactive to the ever-changing dynamics of the aviation industry.
The advent of newer technologies and more efficient aviation equipment has necessitated airport infrastructure modernization. The aviation authorities, especially in the Middle East and Europe, are focusing on the use of emerging technologies and newer processes to enhance the passenger experience both in the airports and on the aircraft.
On the other hand, the market is restrained by challenges such as limited funding for infrastructure development, regulatory complexities, and geopolitical uncertainties.
EMEA Aviation Infrastructure Market Trends
Commercial Airport to Dominate Market Share During the Forecast Period
- As several airports are projected to reach their maximum capacities in passenger handling during the forecast period, new airport expansion and construction activities are underway in the EMEA region, and the plans for several others are in the pipeline, which is expected to bolster the market prospects during the forecast period.
- With the growing emphasis on the concept of smart airports, the operators are investing in new and improved infrastructure. The evolution of technology has enabled the authorities to incorporate various advanced technologies, ranging from 5G wireless connectivity to biometric screening and baggage drop solutions, which enhance the passenger experience at airports. Europe region made one of the highest investments in the world in airport construction and expansion activities in 2022.
- Even in Middle-East and Africa, several airport construction projects are underway in countries, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt, South Africa, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Tanzania, and Kenya, among others, to improve the safety, security, and operations of public transport hubs through strategic infrastructure investments and capacity planning, thereby driving the market for aviation infrastructure in the years to come.
- For instance, Antalya International Airport (Turkey) is undergoing an expansion to upgrade the infrastructure and expand passenger handling capacity. A joint venture of airport operators Fraport and TAV Airports won the tender held by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) for the concession to operate the airport for 25 years and expand its capacity. The joint venture is undertaking an expansion project with an estimated investment of USD 840.2 million, of which USD 659 million is being invested in the first phase. Construction on the first phase of the expansion commenced in January 2022 and is expected to be completed in January 2025. It will double the airport's annual passenger handling capacity from 40 million to 80 million.
Europe is Expected to Register the Highest CAGR During the Forecast Period
- Europe is forecasted to witness the highest growth during the upcoming period on account of the large number of ongoing brownfield and greenfield airport projects in the region. Europe accounts for 51% of highly congested airports globally. Passenger traffic across the European airport network increased by 98% in 2022 compared to the previous year, reaching 1.94 billion passengers. Major European airports, like London-Heathrow Airport, Paris-CDG, Frankfurt Airport, Amsterdam-Schiphol, Madrid Adolfo Suarez Airport, Barcelona Airport, Munich Airport, and Rome-Fiumicino Airport witnessed a huge surge in the number of air passengers in 2022.
- Correspondingly, several airport expansion and modernization plans are underway in the country. Moreover, as per ACI World Airport Traffic Forecast, there was an 89.5% increase in passenger traffic in 2018-2040. For instance, in July 2023, Hamburg Airport took the next big step towards becoming a hydrogen hub in the general aviation sector. The project 'BSR Hydrogen Air Transport - Preparation of Baltic Sea Region Airports for Green Hydrogen' is expected to start in November 2023.
- The project is scheduled to last about three years and involves 16 project partners and 24 associated organizations in addition to Hamburg Airport. The project budget is up to USD 5.3 million. Such developments are expected to boost the market prospects of Europe during the forecast period.
EMEA Aviation Infrastructure Industry Overview
The Europe, Middle-East, and African aviation infrastructure market is semi-consolidated, with many local as well as international players providing various airport construction and infrastructure support services in the region. Bechtel Corporation, VINCI Airports, Skanska AB, Bouygues Construction S.A., and Eiffage SA are some of the prominent players in the market studied. Airport construction companies work closely with the airport authorities to understand the requirements and barriers faced by the airports during operation, thereby ensuring smooth workflow during construction activities.
Construction companies are rapidly adopting advanced technologies, like augmented and virtual reality (VR) and small drones, among others, that can help them reduce the time required to approve design changes and to better understand the bottlenecks in construction, which will help the growth of the players during the forecast period.
For instance, AENA Spain awarded the contract for the Son Sant Joan Airport Terminal to ACCIONA for USD 200 million. The project includes the construction of aircraft parking facilities as part of the west and east wing extensions and the renovation and expansion of a terminal building at the airport with its connection to other modules. ACCIONA has also been awarded the other contract for the construction of three new boarding bridges for USD 21 million.
