A joint venture of airport operators Fraport and TAV Airports won the tender held by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) for the concession to operate the airport for 25 years and expand its capacity. The joint venture is undertaking an expansion project with an estimated investment of USD 840.2 million, of which USD 659 million is being invested in the first phase. Construction on the first phase of the expansion commenced in January 2022 and is expected to be completed in January 2025. It will double the airport's annual passenger handling capacity from 40 million to 80 million.

  • Europe is forecasted to witness the highest growth during the upcoming period on account of the large number of ongoing brownfield and greenfield airport projects in the region. Europe accounts for 51% of highly congested airports globally. Passenger traffic across the European airport network increased by 98% in 2022 compared to the previous year, reaching 1.94 billion passengers. Major European airports, like London-Heathrow Airport, Paris-CDG, Frankfurt Airport, Amsterdam-Schiphol, Madrid Adolfo Suarez Airport, Barcelona Airport, Munich Airport, and Rome-Fiumicino Airport witnessed a huge surge in the number of air passengers in 2022.
  • Correspondingly, several airport expansion and modernization plans are underway in the country. Moreover, as per ACI World Airport Traffic Forecast, there was an 89.5% increase in passenger traffic in 2018-2040. For instance, in July 2023, Hamburg Airport took the next big step towards becoming a hydrogen hub in the general aviation sector. The project 'BSR Hydrogen Air Transport - Preparation of Baltic Sea Region Airports for Green Hydrogen' is expected to start in November 2023.
  • The project is scheduled to last about three years and involves 16 project partners and 24 associated organizations in addition to Hamburg Airport. The project budget is up to USD 5.3 million. Such developments are expected to boost the market prospects of Europe during the forecast period.
