India Chlorine Market Analysis

The chlorine market in India is expected to register a CAGR of over 5% during the forecast period.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a major slowdown in industrial activity, highly impacting the manufacturing sector. Demand for chlorine in the market was hampered due to reduced demand for finished products from various end-user industries. However, the growth of the pharmaceutical industry during the pandemic and the slow revival of the manufacturing sector to pre-pandemic levels of activity are expected to drive demand for chlorine in the market.

  • With chlorine chemistry being extensively used in the production of drugs, the growth of the pharmaceutical industry is expected to be a critical driver for market demand.
  • Similarly, the rising need for water conservation is anticipated to fuel the water treatment industry, further strengthening the demand for chlorine during the forecast period.
  • However, stringent regulations concerning chlorine usage in various end-user industries including the regulations governing chlorine residual in treated water could potentially hinder the market growth.
  • On the flip side, the growing production of PVC in the country and its widening usage in the construction sector are anticipated to provide future opportunities for market growth.

India Chlorine Market Trends

This section covers the major market trends shaping the India Chlorine Market according to our research experts:

Growing Pharmaceutical Industry

  • According to NDCHealthdata, chlorine chemistry is required for the production of 93% of the top-selling drugs, with about 26% of drugs produced containing chlorine in the dose form and more than two-thirds using chlorine chemistry in the manufacturing process.
  • AstraZeneca said global pharmaceutical sales stood at USD 1,186 billion in 2021, an increase of almost 8% compared to the previous year's total, which stood at USD 1,101 billion. The Indian sub-continent is anticipated to register an annual growth rate of 10.9% by the end of 2025.
  • According to the IBEF, the Indian pharmaceutical market is expected to reach a valuation of nearly USD 120 billion by the end of 2030. The market was valued at USD 42 billion in 2021. India also ranks first in having the most manufacturing facilities that comply with the USFDA regulations, including close to 500 API producers that contribute to around 8% of the global API market.
  • India is also one of the top exporters of medical goods, across the globe. As per data from IBEF, the country ranks 12th in the global list of exporters of medical goods with exports reaching USD 24.60 billion in 2022.
  • According to HelpAge Asia, the population of people over 60 years of age is expected to reach 319 million, by 2050. An increase in demand for health services and medicines is anticipated during this period as older people tend to suffer from various degenerative and communicable diseases arising from the aging of the body and its immune system.

Widening Usage in the Water Treatment Industry

  • Chlorine is widely used in the disinfection of water across municipal and commercial applications and as an oxidizing biocide in industrial water treatment. In the wake of water scarcity and the impending climate change crisis, major economies all across the globe have begun taking prompt action to increase water recyclability. The growing population and rising industrial activity are anticipated to drive the need for wastewater treatment across the country.
  • According to a recent Central Pollution Control Board report (March 2021), India's current water treatment capacity is 27.3%, and its sewage treatment capacity is 18.6% (with an additional 5.2% capacity being added). The country built over 800 new sewage treatment plans (STPs) in the last six years.
  • Though India's waste and sewage treatment capacity is higher than the global average of around 20%, given the magnitude of the problem, it is far from adequate. Without immediate action, serious complications could arise.
  • The government of India has taken an active interest in the betterment of wastewater treatment facilities across the country. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 which was launched in October 2021, a sum of INR 158 billion (USD 2.13 billion) was allocated for wastewater management, including the construction of STPs and FSTPs across states and union territories.
  • Various wastewater management projects are already underway. For instance, the Water Supply and Sewerage Board of Bangalore selected SUEZ to support the city in the improvement of its wastewater infrastructures. The group is expected to build a new wastewater treatment plant of 150,000 m3/day capacity, including the rehabilitation of an existing plant with a capacity of 150,000 m3/day and the building of a sewage sludge recycling and recovery plant for the sludge coming from these two plants.
