Transportation Sector to Witness Growth

  • Kazakhstan's pipeline system is operated by the government-owned KazTransOil, a subsidiary of KazMunaiGas. Kazakhstan's natural gas and oil export infrastructure is still integrated with major Caspian oil and natural gas export routes that interlink the region.
  • Consumption of natural gas increased in the country, by 6.05%, year on year, from 13.2 million tons of oil equivalent (mtoe), in 2015 to 16.7 mtoe, in 2018. While gas production has increased in the country from 18.9 mtoe, in 2015 to 21 mtoe, in 2018.
  • Major crude oil export pipelines, in the region, include the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) pipeline to the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, the Kazakhstan-China pipeline, and the Uzen-Atyrau-Samara pipeline to Russia. CPC has a design capacity of around 1.4 million barrels per day.
  • KazTransGas operates the largest network of main gas pipelines in Kazakhstan, stretching for more than 19,000 km, in 2018 and with an annual throughput capacity of up to 160 bcm and gas distribution networks of more than 45,000 km.
  • Kazakhstan oil and gas pipeline industry is expected to grow slightly in the forecast period due to an increase in oil production in the country.

Increasing Demand from Russia and China of Natural Gas to Drive the Market

  • Kazakhstan is heavily dependent on the exports on oil and natural gas. China and Russia are the largest importer of kazakh oil and gas.
  • Gas demand in China increased by almost 18%, as the country accelerated efforts to reduce local air pollution from 206.7 mtoe, in 2018 to 243.3 mtoe, in 2019. Kazakhstan is expected to increase its supply to China in an effort to meet the demand.
  • Agreement signed between the government of Kazakhstan and China, in 2018, to increase the gas supply to China to 10 bcm per year. Natural gas is expected to come from the fields in West Kazakhstan, as well as from the underground natural gas storage facilities of KazTransGas.
  • Increase in the consmuption of natural gas in Russian Federation is also expected to increase the amount of gas imported through Kazaksthan. Consumption of natural gas in the Russian Federation increased from 370.7, in 2017 to 390.8, in 2018, with an increase of almost 5.4%.-
  • Hence, the Kazakhstan oil and gas midstream market is expected to witness growth in the forecast period due to an increase in demand for natural gas from countries like China and increasing consumption in the country.
