Qatar Solid Waste Management Market Analysis

The Qatar solid waste management market is expected to witness a CAGR of 5.81% during the forecast period.

Qatar is counted among the world’s fastest-growing economies. Municipal solid waste management is one of the most severe challenges faced by Qatar, primarily due to the high population growth rate, urbanization, industrial growth, and economic expansion. The country has one of the highest per capita waste generation rates worldwide, which is as high as 1.8 kg per day.

Qatar produces more than 2.5 million metric ton of municipal solid waste each year. The solid waste stream is mainly comprised of organic materials (~60%), while the rest of the waste steam is made up of recyclables, like glass, paper, metals, and plastics.

  • Qatar is focusing on waste management to protect the environment. The government of Qatar is trying to decrease the amount of waste that is produced by industries, commercial sites, and households, as well as recycle and reuse waste. The government pays special attention to waste management and treatment, due to its keenness to reduce its effects on health and maintain a civic condition.

Qatar Solid Waste Management Market Trends

This section covers the major market trends shaping the Qatar Solid Waste Management Market according to our research experts:

Major Waste Generating Muncipalities in Qatar

In Qatar, more than 99% of the population lives in urban areas. Municipalities that have a higher population and industrial concentration, such as Doha, have a higher waste generation in the country.
More than 90% of the solid waste is generated in the urban cities, which have industrial concentration and high population density.
Doha, Al Rayyan, and Umm Salal are expected to account for the largest share of waste generation among all the other municipalities.
Doha alone is expected to contribute ~60% of the overall solid waste generated in the country, primarily due to the high industrialization activities, such as construction associated with the Qatar national vision 2030 and the FIFA World Cup 2022.
Apart from the general domestic waste generated in the country, the construction industry is one of the significant waste generating industries in Qatar.
The Qatar government and domestic municipalities are taking various steps to reduce waste generation and landfill, as the geography of the country is very small for the current waste generation rate in Qatar.

Landfill is a Main Method of Solid Waste Management in Qatar

The predominant method of solid waste disposal is landfilling. The collected is discharged at various transfer stations from where it is sent to the landfill. There are three landfills in Qatar; Umm Al-Afai for bulky and domestic waste, Rawda Rashed for construction and demolition waste, and Al-Krana for sewage wastes.
Rawdat Rashed is one of the three major landfill sites in Qatar, used primarily for construction and demolition waste. Rawdat Rashed landfill has about 40 million metric ton of mixed construction waste with an area of about 7 million square meters, which contributes to many of the state’s construction needs.
However, the method of waste disposal by landfill is not a practical solution for a country like Qatar, where land availability is limited.
Currently, 91% of non-household waste is transported to health landfills directly, and the bulk of it is recycled and ultimately is collected through companies that screen waste in health landfills.

Qatar Solid Waste Management Industry Overview

The market is competitive and largely managed by government authorities. Local municipalities are directly responsible for collecting solid waste in Qatar, by taking logistical steps in partnership with specific entities in the private sector.
International companies are racing to gain a share of the market studied, owing to the increasing focus of the government to reduce more than 90% of the waste from landfills by 2022.
More than half of the companies that were granted a license to carry out waste management operations in the country are foreign companies and partner with Qatari companies in managing factories to dump, sort, recycle, and burn waste, and make it reusable.
