United Kingdom Video Surveillance Market Analysis
The United Kingdom Video Surveillance Market size is estimated at USD 5.21 billion in 2024, and is expected to reach USD 6.79 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 5.43% during the forecast period (2024-2029).
The industry is pursuing digital and networked systems and developing higher-resolution cameras and standard communication protocols between the products. The video surveillance industry is on the verge of transforming into an AI-driven security system. A full range of AI security solutions are emerging from the existing video surveillance systems. These systems will record video footage but do much more to improve security and safety. This shift is due to customers' decreasing interest in video and their increased concern for preventing and resolving safety issues.
According to the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), the total number of security cameras in the United Kingdom is around 5.2 million, or around one security camera for every 13 people in the United Kingdom. The number of cameras has remained consistent, with an increase in the same pattern as population growth. Despite this, only one crime per 1000 cameras is resolved due to poor-quality images supplied by most camera installations. The demand for technical improvements in all aspects of the systems is therefore driving the market growth.
In the United Kingdom, there is a significant change in how surveillance cameras are being used and regulated, with AI-based biometric technology rapidly becoming a preferred method of identification by law enforcement agencies and the growing use of live facial recognition. There is estimated to be at least one camera for every 13 people in the country, with more than 95% of these cameras operating exclusively, and there is an increasing number of them. The College of Police says surveillance could prevent as many as 16 to 51 crimes in 100.
Moreover, the government is trying to solidify the regulations regarding installing surveillance systems in public places. The UK government is introducing a Criminal Justice Act to enable police and national crime agencies to check facial recognition on UK driver's license databases. In 2023, the government also announced the abolition of the office of the Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner (BSCC), an independent watchdog, from 2024 as part of its Data Protection and Digital Information Bill (DPDI Bill).
In June 2023, the government announced its plans to remove Chinese-made surveillance equipment from sensitive installations to address concerns that it could be used for spying by China, tightened procurement rules, and ordered departments not to install Chinese surveillance cameras in sensitive establishments. These types of initiatives would encourage the in-house development of surveillance hardware and software products to acknowledge the demand.
Furthermore, the UK government is implementing increased border security. Critical national infrastructure sites such as power plants, government facilities, pipelines, and transport hubs are becoming increasingly important for protection. Spending on security is driven by continued urbanization, the expansion of public transport networks, and high-profile security breaches. Demand for qualified labor and more sophisticated security systems can only be stimulated by such a combination of technical innovation and the integration of systems.
United Kingdom Video Surveillance Market Trends
The Software Segment is Expected to Witness Significant Growth
- Software is crucial in enabling advanced video analytics capabilities in surveillance systems. Video analytics algorithms can analyze video footage in real-time, automatically detect and track objects, perform facial recognition, identify anomalies, and generate alerts. The increasing sophistication and accuracy of video analytics software make it a valuable tool for enhancing security and operational efficiency, driving the demand for such software in the market.
- Integrating AI technologies, such as machine learning and deep learning, with surveillance software has revolutionized the capabilities of surveillance systems. AI-powered software can learn and adapt to patterns and behaviors, improving the accuracy of video analytics, reducing false alarms, and enabling more intelligent and proactive security measures. The demand for AI-integrated surveillance software is expected to grow as organizations seek to leverage the benefits of AI in their surveillance operations.
- Moreover, cloud-based surveillance solutions offer scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. They allow users to store and access video footage and data remotely, enabling easy scalability of storage capacity and providing access to surveillance data from anywhere. Cloud-based surveillance software also facilitates remote monitoring and management, making it an attractive option for businesses and organizations of all sizes. The increasing adoption of cloud-based solutions is expected to drive the growth of the software segment in the surveillance market.
- Organizations in the United Kingdom are also investing aggressively in adopting digital technologies, including cloud. According to a survey conducted by Unisys, several organizations have been aiming to invest in the cloud in recent years. Increasing investments in cloud solutions will push the growth of the market studied.
The Infrastructure Segment is Expected to Witness Significant Growth
- The United Kingdom has been making significant investments in infrastructure development across various sectors, such as transportation, energy, healthcare, and public facilities. These infrastructure projects often require robust video surveillance systems to enhance security, monitor operations, and ensure the safety of people and assets. As the country continues to invest in infrastructure, the demand for video surveillance solutions in the infrastructure segment is expected to grow.
- According to the GOV.UK, the UK government spent approximately GBP 25.9 billion (~USD 32.5 billion) on rail in the financial year 2022/23 compared to GBP 5.6 billion (~USD 7.03 billion) for national roads, GBP 5.5 billion (~USD 6.9 billion) for local roads, GBP 4.3 billion (~USD 5.4 billion) for public transport, and GBP 2.2 billion (~USD 2.7 billion) for other transportation.
- Protecting critical infrastructure and public safety is a top priority for the country. Video surveillance is crucial to security systems in infrastructure settings such as airports, seaports, railways, and government buildings. Surveillance cameras help deter criminal activities, monitor access points, detect potential threats, and provide evidence in case of incidents. The need to address safety and security concerns in infrastructure environments drives the demand for video surveillance solutions.
- For instance, in February 2024, it was announced that Transport for London, which runs the tube and bus network in central London, tested 11 algorithms to monitor passengers at Willesden Green Underground station near the city between October 2022 and September 2023. The proof-of-concept trial is the first time the transport body has combined AI and live video footage to generate alerts sent to frontline staff. Over 44,000 alerts were sent during the test, of which 19,000 were received immediately and made available to station staff.
- The United Kingdom is actively promoting innovative city initiatives to leverage technology to improve urban areas' efficiency, sustainability, and safety. Video surveillance plays a vital role in smart city projects, enabling capabilities such as traffic management, crowd monitoring, public space surveillance, and emergency response systems. As smart city initiatives gain momentum in the United Kingdom, the demand for video surveillance solutions in infrastructure settings is expected to increase.
